2010 Update

Transit has been doing great upgrades to the road - and the drive through is better then ever..

There are more slow lanes - even though they are not marked as overtaking lanes most trucks and slower cars do pull over and let faster traffic passed.

There's also the new touring route information - more on that soon...!

The answer has arrived and it's a NO 80 kmh speed Limit in the Waioeka Gorge...!

Great news for all users of the road...

See the story from the Gisborne Herald here

Transit has made some great improvements too...

On the last trip through there has been lots of resealing work done and new passing bays created all the way through the Gorge plus on other sections coming into Gisborne.

Thanks to all who responded to this site - a positive outcome...!

I really do like driving - and the Waioeka Gorge is one of the last bits of the worlds roading network where you can travel a fair distance on some great interesting roads away from traffic and population centres.

Cheers
Russell Holland

Martin Lowe's Waioeka Thoughts
"I myself have driven over steeper roads and Gorges in Europe (Austria, Italy, Switzerland and Germany) and have never seen limited 80 signage anywhere on similar roads and Gorges to our one in question. People over there are considerate and certainly drive to their ability and conditions."
